Therapists for college students near San Francisco, CA
Welcome to my practice! We all face challenges in our lives. With those challenges come opportunities to choose how we respond. Some of the difficulties we face include adapting to a new school, job, or relationship, making new friends, and finding meaning in one's life. Other challenges are unique to the individual like discrimination, identity concerns, or trauma. I create a safe space for clients where I am present, genuine, and empathetic. Central to my approach is learning about my clients in a nonjudgmental, affirming way. I help clients develop a deeper understanding of how their past and current experiences influence their thoughts and reactions. The therapeutic interventions I use help clients develop skills to meet their challenges. Therapy is a collaboration that leads to enhanced self-awareness and effective problem-solving. With increased understanding, skills, support, and resources, we have more freedom to effectively cope in ways that are consistent with our values. Freedom means we are not repeating previous maladaptive patterns, allowing us to live the life we want, experiencing greater fulfillment and happiness.
The people who come to me are curious to get to know themselves in a deeper away. I work with people to help them heal from trauma, interrupt unhelpful patterns, set healthier boundaries in relationships, dismantle crippling perfectionism, bolster their sense of self, increase self-esteem, mindfully manage anxiety, and live a more authentic existence. Together, we can work toward both short-term and long-term change.
The Brown Therapy Center clinicians are a professional and experienced group of psychotherapists who come from a diverse range of educational backgrounds and specialties. As seasoned guides and intentional listeners, we aim to meet you where you are on your journey, providing insight and facilitating healing along the way and tailoring our treatment methods to meet the unique needs of each client. Though we draw from the traditional psychoanalytic frameworks including the work of C.G. Jung, we aim to take an integrative approach to counseling that incorporates elements of philosophy, spirituality, and perspectives from across cultures. In addition to more holistic models, our clinicians are highly versed in scientifically validated approaches, various somatic modalities, and psychedelic integration.
Welcome to my Psychotherapy Practice. Currently, I am only seeing clients via video conferencing. Primarily, I work with people suffering from anxiety, addictive behaviors and couples in distress. When people seek counseling, they may report anxiety, depression and insecurity. One consistent theme is how often people make decisions that run counter to their desires and well being. Therapy can help us separate from, or gain perspective about, outdated attitudes and behaviors. One profound outcome is that we learn to accept our humanness. For many this has been inconceivable. Acceptance frees up energy to pursue interests. But self-acceptance has little to do with approval by others. Through these conversations, people often discover how current and past relationships influence mood, self-esteem and motivation. Psychotherapy helps us to recognize and detach from emotional reactions that interfere with growth. Psychotherapy, regardless of emphasis, includes an educational element. We learn to self-reflect (gain insight) in the presence of another person. Most of us need help in discovering why we do what we do. Self-reflection gives us a glimpse into our fears and desires. My style of work is active and exploratory. I tend to shy away from being directive though may suggest a focus during the session. I often employ humor or may share personal experience to bring home a point.
I work with adults of all ages, couples, and adolescents. I offer virtual and in-person sessions at my office in the Castro. I have extensive experience working with college students and graduate students. I can help with a wide range of issues including: anxiety and stress, depression, self-esteem, relationship issues, grief, identity issues, transitions, ADHD/neurodivergence, difficulties with regulating alcohol use, gender and sexuality, loneliness, and more.
Hello. I work with adults, families and couples. My training and expertise are treating anxiety, depression, relationship/family/in-law issues, psychosis, personality disorders, life transition, immigrations and identity exploration. My therapy styles are warm, client centered, emotional focused. I share with my clients a lot that "You want to make sure you feel comfortable talking to me." It is true because therapy is personal. As a first generation immigrant and my life experiences, it has led me to choose social work as my career and passion and it also shaped the person I am today. It’s my hope to use all the skills I have to explore with you and provide guidance on whatever stage you are in at the moment.
I help clients deal with depression, anxiety and the struggles with navigating relationships and life changes. We work together to discover, and help you move towards a path in life that works well for you. I offer a warm and accepting space where you can contemplate your current life path and explore your hopes and dreams.
Are you hard on yourself? Do you hold back from loved ones or struggle to accomplish things? It doesn't have to be this way. You’ve been struggling for a long time and you can change. Opening up can feel uncomfortable, but therapy can help you to a better path. You can get unstuck by disentangling from old patterns, imagining new possibilities, and connecting to what's most important. I have fourteen years of experience at UCSF helping patients to recover from moderate to severe mood symptoms and to more creatively participate in their lives. I also hold a credential in perinatal mental health. My psychotherapy practice is online or through walk and talk sessions in San Francisco parks. I’d like to help you see beyond this difficult moment. I’d love to help you enjoy your life more.
I am a Marriage & Family Therapist (MFT) in the Noe Valley neighborhood of San Francisco, where I work primarily with individuals and some families. My main focus of treatment and experience are in anger management, teenagers, life transitions, and relationships. I enjoy working with teenagers and young adults as they develop their personal identity and grow towards healthy independence and need support they cannot get from their peer or parent group. I have a great deal of experience with young adults and mid-life individuals facing career stress/fatigue and significant life challenges such as divorce, addiction/recovery, and trauma. I have experience in working with the parents of children who are learning to support the needs of a youth with emerging mental health issues. Prior to opening my practice, I worked in a wide range of therapeutic settings, as both a clinician and clinical supervisor, ranging from college counseling centers, inpatient psychiatric facilities, juvenile correctional centers, and community-based agencies to a very diverse populations of individuals and families. Additionally, I am the in-house therapist for Square, a large financial technology company here in San Francisco. My background training in the field is influenced greatly by Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Family Systems, Solution Focused Therapy, and Humanistic/Person Centered Theory. I have received extensive training in Anger Management and have facilitated numerous groups to address issues associated with anger control. I also regularly facilitate trainings on the impact of trauma on individuals and communities. My approach with each individual is very collaborative. I truly believe in identifying the goals the client wants to get out of their work with me and determining the best strategy for getting results. Often times, to augment the therapy one is receiving, a person will also work with psychiatrists, nutritionists, school teachers/counselors/tutors, sponsors, sobriety companions, and other healthcare providers. I have vast experience in working and coordinating treatment with other professionals to create the most effective plan of care for you to get the results you define. I have a very broad knowledge of services offered within the San Francisco Bay Area and can be of assistance in making these connections and referrals. I am also a firm believer in constant personal and professional growth through ongoing learning, reading, research, peer and professional consultation, and experience. Outside of work, I regularly train in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and really enjoy surfing. I have been fascinated by stand-up comedy since I was a child and watch live shows as often as possible. I live here in San Francisco with my wife and our dog, Leonard.
George Kolcun, MFT and our team of associates provide psychotherapy and support for adults, couples and adolescents to address a wide range of emotional and relational challenges.
Pain can quietly shape your life and sense of self, even when things look “fine” from the outside. It may show up as anxiety, depression, grief, anger, low self-esteem, substance use, or painful relationship patterns. You might notice yourself longing for closeness while also pulling away, or repeating dynamics you don’t fully understand. You may be navigating relationship challenges, life transitions, trauma, or longstanding attachment patterns that continue to surface in the present. Even when you can make sense of your experiences, something may still feel unresolved or unmoved. Together, we take time to know you and to understand how you experience yourself and others—how you relate, protect, and respond to closeness and emotion. We also pay attention to patterns as they emerge in your life and in therapy. My style is warm, collaborative, and relational. Our work supports greater awareness and a sense of safety, gradually loosening what has felt fixed so new possibilities can emerge. You’re welcome to reach out for a complimentary consultation. I reserve a few sliding scale spots for college students. Please reach out for more info.

I’m so glad you’re here. Taking the first step toward therapy can feel daunting. Maybe you feel misunderstood, overwhelmed, or like you have to handle everything on your own. Whatever you’re carrying, I want you to know that you don’t have to navigate it alone. I’m here to support you as you step outside your comfort zone and move toward growth, self-discovery, and healing. As someone who was once a student myself, I understand how challenging it can be to manage anxiety, depression, perfectionism, shifting relationships, grief, trauma, and everything in between—on top of trying to keep up with school and the pressures of “figuring it all out.” I work with college students at all stages—whether you’re adjusting to campus life, pushing through to the next break, preparing for graduation and the uncertainty ahead, or returning to school after time away. Whoever you are, this is a space where you can show up exactly as you are, without judgment. As a child of immigrants, I’ve personally navigated the complexities of balancing cultural expectations, identity, and belonging. My own journey has deepened my empathy and passion for helping others find clarity, self-acceptance, and peace in their own stories. Students come to me for all kinds of reasons—managing stress, navigating friendships and relationships (yes, even situationships), figuring out what’s next, or simply having a space to process it all. Whatever brings you to therapy, we’ll approach it with curiosity, compassion, and maybe even some laughter along the way. Whether this is your first time in therapy or you’re continuing your journey, I’m honored to support you every step of the way. Hey- I'm glad you're here. Can I just name that looking for the right therapist for yourself can sometimes be a tad overwhelming? Give yourself some props for working through these profiles-- some of my clients have described it like 'dating' because it can take a while to find someone who you really vibe with- so I'll cut to the chase of who I am, what I do, and what you can expect from sessions with me! I'm a relational and person-centered therapist, meaning, I'm attuned to your needs and goals, act like a dynamic and engaged human in session, and really strongly believe you deserve a space where you can show up fully. I also prioritize the things you need in session to feel comfortable- if that's sitting on the floor, then I'll meet you there! If you need to fidget- I've got some for you. If you want to be burrito-wrapped up under a fuzzy blanket, that's just fine too! Ultimately, I want you to feel like you're getting something out of your time in therapy and we'll work together to create a space that allows for that. A lot of the students I work with are thoughtful, inquisitive, and just carrying a lot more than most people realize. They might look like they’re keeping up just fine, but inside they’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or questioning where life is headed. Some are navigating grief or the fallout of a breakup, others are dealing with anxiety, burnout, major academic stress, or trying to figure out who they are, where they're headed, and what matters to them. If that sounds familiar, you’re definitely not alone. In therapy with me, I aim for us to create a space where you can be completely yourself without having to downplay your struggles. I bring warmth, curiosity, and care, and some helpful perspectives and ways of coping that are 100% tailored to you and what you need. You show up, and we’ll take things step-by-step and explore what’s weighing on you and what may help you get through it, together. If anything here resonated with you- I welcome you to reach out and set up a 20 minute free phone call with me and we'll go from there! Best of luck finding the care you're seeking!
I aim to provide a supportive environment that fosters reflection and growth. I am trained to provide evidence-based treatment in a flexible manner and often pull from CBT and DBT concepts and interventions. My approach emphasizes not only the building of skills to address your mental health symptoms but also skill development in the areas of communication and conflict management toward improving relationships. While I value maintaining a generalist practice, I have special interests in working with and supporting athletes and those who identify as a member of a marginalized group. I am also invested in helping people to access care that is right for them, and will make every effort to provide additional resources/providers if I am not the right fit.
Whatever difficulty is bringing you into therapy, ultimately it's an opportunity to learn about who you are, and how your personal and intergenerational history is affecting your experience of yourself and how you perceive the world. I work best with people who are hungry for this understanding, so they can untangle themselves from whatever is holding them back from living their best life. The truth can bring immense relief, but it is also often painful. I take seriously the need to create a relationship that is deeply compassionate and supportive, one that feels safe enough that you can confront whatever truth needs to be faced. We are embedded in cultures and political institutions that shape our experience. It is essential to consider larger social forces to fully make sense of our lives, and including these factors in the therapeutic process can help empower you by relating your personal difficulties to systems of power and oppression. Reaching out can be hard. I invite any skepticism or questions you have about me or how I work. I expect to earn your trust and respect, and I won't take it for granted.
