I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker and a Certified Group Psychotherapist with over 12 years experience providing individual, group, and family therapy. I work with adolescents and adults of all ages who struggle with anxiety, depression, self-esteem, life transitions, relationships, decision-making, work/school achievement, and/or making behavioral changes. Drawing from multiple theoretical approaches (psychodynamic, behavioral, cognitive behavioral; relational, mindfulness, etc.), I provide the opportunity to identify, explore, and work through challenges and desires in a safe and supportive environment. In addition to working with adults and adolescents individually, I specialize in group, couples, and family therapy. I lead three mixed gender groups (Tues 5:30-6:45p, Th 12-1:15p, and Th 5:45-7p) and one men's group (Mon 6-7:15p) in my private practice. I also co-lead an observed group (Tues 10:15-11:30a) at the Brookline Center for Community Mental Health. Please visit my website (www.joelkrieg.com) to learn more about my groups and my practice. We provide outpatient trauma-focused psychotherapy and mind-body wellness counseling for youth, adults, couples and families who have been impacted by interpersonal trauma, loss, social oppression and other forms of life adversity. We recognize that exposure to trauma is a pervasive reality in our world. We pay careful attention to the wide range of historical experiences that contribute to ongoing distress in those we serve. We understand our clients’ struggles through the lens of complex trauma, with the belief that individuals are shaped most profoundly by their earliest and closest relationships. When those relationships have been fraught with chronic adversity – whether due to maltreatment and neglect, poverty and discrimination, or the legacy of intergenerational or ancestral trauma – it can alter the course of healthy human development in profound ways. One’s emotions, self-worth, behaviors, and overall functioning can be deeply impacted. One’s relationships, schooling, and occupation may suffer. One’s goals and dreams, spiritual direction and overall life path can get derailed. In the same breath, we honor the resilience of the human spirit, and marvel at the capacity of every person to survive, heal, persevere and ultimately thrive despite seemingly overwhelming obstacles.

Everyone deserves to live a life filled with pleasure, purpose, and meaning. Sometimes, we struggle with the inevitable difficulties of life and feel anxious, down, or stuck. I enjoy helping clients engage in self-exploration so they can stop struggling and start living the life they want to live. My specialties include mood and anxiety disorders, relationship issues, and difficult life transitions. I particularly enjoy working with college students, student-athletes, and young adults. My therapeutic approach is integrative, incorporating cognitive-behavioral, relational, and mindfulness-based approaches. I utilize warmth and authenticity to create a safe, non-judgmental environment. Emphasizing total well being, I help clients to examine the connection between mental and physical health and to build adaptive coping skills to live healthier lives. I also provide career counseling for those who are confused about their career path, having difficulty selecting a college major, or who feel unfulfilled in their jobs. Applying evidenced-based assessments and career development theory, this time-limited service provides insight into fitting careers based on one's interests, values, personality style, and skills.

The years surrounding college --young adulthood--is a time filled with amazing exploration as well as stress, sadness, and a lot of unknowns. We really begin to learn not just about who we have been to others, but about who we can become. Working with a therapist can offer a way to explore some of these feelings and experiences with someone who has first hand understanding of being a youg adult (we all were at one time!), who wants to get to know who you are becoming and help you find a way to get there with a sense of power and voice. Life can be awesome but it can also be scary and hard sometimes and no-one has to do this alone!

Hello, If you have found this page I commend you for working to find a resource with whom to unpack the issues causing you confusion and suffering. I have an extensive clinical history working with people in a variety of settings with a large array of presenting issues, ranging from mood/thought disorders, developmental delays, trauma, family conflict, addictions, life-transitions, stress-related issues, and many other simple and complex problems. As a result, I have a level of comfort in working with a wide range of people with a wide range of issues from a wide range of backgrounds. I am a culturally sensitive trauma-informed clinician chiefly concerned with ensuring that you feel seen, heard, and safe in our relationship. I tend to work from a strengths-based biopsychosocial perspective with a focus on the emergence of one's self in a social and relational context, specifically how this self is created, developed, and sustained. However, most importantly, I will work to gain mutual clarity about how you can begin to shift the notions of our who your "self" is and how it can attain increasing amounts of peace in your life.

Hi, thanks so much for taking an interest in my practice. It takes great courage and awareness to come to the decision to reach out for support. I see clients in my office in Cambridge, MA, near Davis Square, and in Melrose, MA, as well as by teletherapy/videochat. I specialize in helping people to free themselves from the 'silent conversation' that we have with ourselves throughout the day. By understanding how this conversation influences our thoughts, feelings, and actions, it is possible to adapt it to feel more empowered in life. It is my hope that your therapy experience will feel comforting, meaningful, real, and effective in getting to the heart of your core concerns. I work from an integrative framework in a warm and interactive environment, drawing from holistic, cognitive, and psychodynamic influences to help people to reclaim a sense of choice and authorship in their lives. My background includes more than 25 years in clinical healthcare, school, and community settings working therapeutically with individuals, couples, and groups on a wide-range of issues causing acute and chronic distress. The college years can be some of the most overwhelming — academic pressure, perfectionism, anxiety, homesickness, identity shifts, and the weight of major transitions, often layered on top of experiences you carried here long before. Whatever you're navigating, I'll meet you with directness, honesty, and genuine warmth — and there will likely be some laughter along the way. We'll work toward your goals as a team, with care tailored to you and shaped by an understanding that your background, identity, and lived experience matter deeply. This is a space space, and all are welcome here. I commonly work with students navigating: - Anxiety and perfectionism - Depression - Trauma and past experiences - Chronic illness and chronic pain - Homesickness and life transitions - Identity and self-worth Therapy with me is supportive and nonjudgmental — and direct. Expect to be gently challenged. Together we'll work on dismantling negative core beliefs, shifting unhelpful thought patterns, building healthy boundaries, and finding coping skills that actually fit your life . Our first session is about you. I'll walk you through what to expect and your rights as a client, and you'll have space to ask questions. Building trust and rapport makes the work possible — so we'll begin laying that foundation while I gather some important background. My goal is that when you leave, you feel heard, understood, and genuinely hopeful that growth is possible.
