I work with teens and adults to provide a gentle approach to reflecting and engaging with complex emotions. I sit with my clients through their challenges and play an active role in helping them finding hope, understanding, and resolutions. I work with individuals who have experienced grief/loss, anxiety, depression, trauma, challenges in relationships, and difficult life transitions. I love using art therapy to increase insight and awareness into our thoughts and feelings. I am also trained in EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) and use this modality to help clients identify and reprocess memories that have contributed to the beliefs they hold about themselves. Farmington Valley Counseling Center, LLC helps adolescents and young adults who are struggling with: - Anxiety - Depression - Family-related stressors (divorce, illness, death in the family) - School-related stressors (difficulty managing academic demands, school refusal, peer issues) - Adjusting to life transitions (going to a new school, starting college, life after college)
I work collaboratively with students who face a variety of challenges, including life transitions, relationship issues, and navigating queer identities. College and graduate school typically occur at pivotal developmental points for people in terms of figuring out who they are, what they want, and separating/individuating from parental figures. Together, we will work to understand your inner life, what works and what doesn't in terms of your thinking, behavior and ways of relating to others. Often, patterns develop that help us stay safe and secure when we're young, but would benefit from re-examination and modification to live a more fulfilling adult life. I have a sub-specialty working with people with Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), a highly distressing fixation on a perceived appearance defect that can impact daily functioning and quality of life. I help you understand where the appearance fixation originated, including negative self appraisals and rituals/compulsions that accompany BDD. Learning to face feared and avoided situations is a gradual process that takes place over time, freeing you from the hold of BDD and leading to improved functioning and a more satisfying life.

I have experience working with children, adolescents, adults, elderly, couples and families. I believe that therapy looks different for each person and I strive to provide a supportive and non-judgmental therapeutic setting based on compassion, trust, and honesty where we can work together to utilize your own individual strengths to reach your goals and to be able to better manage the stressors in your life.
I am not your typical therapist, and strive to always create that emotional connection that allows us to work through any issue as a team. Most of my clients have already tried traditional therapy, and haven't been able to engage in one way or the other. Many of my clients haven't felt heard or understood, and it is a goal of mine to make therapy accessible for all. My belief as a therapist is that everyone can benefit- and should benefit from the relationship they have with their therapist. My clients believe in person centered care- and feedback goes both ways. I provide a trauma informed environment where the client gets to lead. As a therapist, my main goal is to meet you where you are at and go from there. Over time my skills have been honed for working with struggling teens, self injury, LGBT youth, and families. I have a unique approach to all of these, but have seen fantastic results in all areas. I also enjoy family coaching, and offer an on call service for families. If you need a 'ride or die' therapist- that's me. I'm committed to navigating any and all concerns and barriers when working together- no problem is too big. When we agree to work together, I am committing to finding times during the week that work for you. My availability is based on you.
I’m Alexandra Casamassima (a mouthful, I know), a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker. More specifically, I help people create positive change in their lives when they are struggling. I have expertise in working with women. This includes college students or millennials going through a “quarter life crisis,” the pregnancy and postpartum period, and beyond. I support women in exploring their history and revealing patterns that may be impacting their emotions or relationships, or just help tackle a difficult season of life. I am not your typical therapist, and we will not be interpreting dreams from a couch. Therapy should not be an awkward and stale experience. Expect therapy with me to be a compassionate and safe space to process what you’re going through. However, I am not a sit and nod therapist. I will be real. I will challenge you in the areas I think we need to re-evaluate. I will use humor. I might curse here and there. While I have extensive education and training that has prepared me for this role, my experience has mostly taught me that YOU are the expert of your life. You have all the strengths, capabilities, and life experiences you need to get you where you want to go. My skills involve utilizing those strengths, giving you the tools to cope with what you’re struggling with, and elicit the change you want to see. I do not have a magic wand (otherwise my rates would be much higher), but if you put in the work during the therapy process, transformation is possible. If you’re reading this, chances are you are suffering in some way. Maybe you’re experiencing anxiety, maybe you’re overwhelmed with being a mom, or maybe you know you’re just not getting the most out of life. Please reach out if you’d like to take the first step to make positive change.
