Kidan Kidane
Board-certified as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, I work with adults navigating anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, life transitions, stress, and times when they simply don't feel like themselves. I especially connect with people who are curious about themselves and want to understand not only what they're feeling, but what may be contributing to it. You may be looking for relief from symptoms, support with medication, or a space to better understand patterns that keep showing up in your life. Whatever brings you here, my goal is to meet you where you are and help you feel more grounded, confident, and connected to the life you want to live. I know that reaching out for mental health care can feel vulnerable, especially when you're trying to find someone you can trust and feel comfortable talking to. Good care, I believe, starts with feeling heard, respected, and understood as a whole person. Working together, my hope is to be someone you can talk to openly as we make sense of what's going on and figure out what will genuinely help, so you can feel better, understand yourself more deeply, and move toward a life that feels healthier and more fulfilling. I believe mental health is deeply connected to how we live, feel, and function in our everyday lives. Along with medication management, I like to look at the bigger picture, including sleep, nutrition, movement, physical and metabolic health, relationships, and the experiences that have shaped you. I'm particularly interested in nutritional psychiatry and the connection between physical and emotional well-being, and also draw from psychodynamic and insight-oriented approaches to help uncover patterns that may be influencing how you feel or relate to others. Most importantly, I want our work to feel useful and personal to you, not like a one-size-fits-all treatment plan. With me, you'll find warmth, curiosity, and an open-minded, nonjudgmental space to be yourself. I ask questions, listen closely, and genuinely want to understand what life looks like from your perspective, while also valuing shared decision-making so you understand the "why" behind your treatment and feel comfortable asking questions along the way. My style is thoughtful but practical, and we'll work together to find an approach that fits your needs, values, and goals. My path to becoming a psychiatric nurse practitioner grew from my nursing background and a longstanding curiosity about people — what shapes us, how our experiences affect us, and what helps us heal and grow. Working in acute and inpatient settings, including during the height of the pandemic, deepened my understanding of how closely our mental and physical health are connected. Those experiences shaped my belief that we can't meaningfully care for one while ignoring the other, and strengthened my commitment to providing thoughtful, whole-person psychiatric care. Outside of work, I'm a competitive endurance runner and lifelong sports enthusiast. Beyond that, I love being outdoors, exploring NYC, traveling, and trying new foods. I'm endlessly curious and enjoy reading and learning about psychology, nutrition, metabolic health, exercise physiology, and the latest science on health and human performance.

I specialize in helping teens and adults with anxiety, depression, relationship struggles, trauma, life transitions, and helping you feel more in control of your emotions. I provide my clients with concrete and valuable tools, as well as a greater understanding into their behaviors, thoughts, and emotions that contribute to self-defeating patterns and conflicted relationships. In the safety of this open environment, you’ll be able to explore new ways of living that are free from anxiety, nagging self-doubt and criticism. My approach to therapy is integrative and tailored to you based on your unique needs. Working from an antiracist and LGBTQ+ affirmative lens; I draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), psychodynamic techniques, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).

Psychiatry, at its best, treats the whole person, not just a set of symptoms. As a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), I bring a modern, integrative lens to medication management, combining advanced psychopharmacology with evidence-based lifestyle interventions to help you find lasting stability. My practice centers on adults and young professionals navigating some of life's most demanding transitions: career changes, burnout, grief and loss, and mood and anxiety disorders that can make even ordinary days feel unmanageable. I also have a deep commitment to serving veterans and healthcare workers, two populations I understand carry their own particular weight and complexity. Whatever brings you here, you can expect care that is thorough, individualized, and rooted in respect. I believe the relationship between patient and clinician matters as much as any prescription, and I'm here to be a steady, empathetic, and committed partner. I look forward to supporting you as you navigate life's challenges, reclaim your sense of balance, and move toward meaningful healing. What drives this work, for me, is a genuine belief that healing requires treating the whole person — biology, life experience, and personal goals all in conversation with one another. That belief shapes everything about how I practice. You are an active partner in your care, not a passive recipient of it. Sessions are thorough and collaborative by design, as I take time to listen to your needs and celebrate your victories, allowing me to tailor every treatment plan to your unique circumstances rather than applying a one-size-fits-all framework. Advanced psychopharmacology is a core part of my practice, and I pair it with a supportive, solution-focused approach to help you move toward symptom stability, emotional resilience, and a clearer sense of direction. Patient autonomy matters deeply to me, which is why my approach is grounded and practical, empowering you in your own healing and long-term mental resilience. I'm here to collaborate and help you make informed decisions about your care, because the best outcomes happen when we're building something together. My path to psychiatry began in a Burn Unit, where I spent years caring for patients navigating severe, life-altering physical trauma. That work taught me something I carry into every session today: true recovery requires addressing the mind just as thoroughly as the body. The two cannot be separated. Witnessing that reality firsthand sparked my commitment to becoming a psychiatric clinician and deepened my passion for working alongside trauma survivors. The thoroughness, empathy, and dedication that shaped my early nursing practice came with me into this work, and continue to guide the care I bring to you. When I'm not working, I'm usually spending time with the people I care about, exploring whatever the local food scene has to offer, watching a good movie, or planning the next trip somewhere new. Music has always been part of my life — I play guitar — and I stay active through regular exercise.

As a licensed mental health counselor with more than seven years of experience, my work centers on supporting individuals navigating anxiety, depression, OCD, relationship challenges, adjustment disorders, trauma, and personality disorders. Warmth, integrity, and cultural competence guide everything I do. In our work together, I create space to explore vulnerability, deepen personal understanding, and move toward meaningful change. Discovering your thoughts and feelings in therapy deepens your insight into how you move through the world and who you truly are. Beginning therapy is a significant commitment, and I don't take that lightly. The strength of the patient-therapist relationship is, in my view, the most important factor in your ability to heal and grow. That's why I strive to build authentic rapport that fosters genuine curiosity, safety to make mistakes, shared humanity and humor, and direct but empathic honesty. Creating this environment that feels supportive and non-judgmental is always my first priority. There is never a challenge too small or too large to address in therapy, and I believe it can be a profound healing experience when you have a trusted therapist you can rely on. There is real value in reflecting on your past experiences to understand how your foundation has shaped you. Our early relational experiences significantly impact attachment styles, and in the present, we often seek out situations that feel familiar even when they no longer serve us. Through this process of exploration, we work together to transform unconscious habits into conscious choices. Central to that work is how you view yourself. Building an empathetic inner world, where self-compassion rewires how your brain responds to stress, is an essential part of the therapeutic process. That clearer view of yourself improves the quality of your choices, ensures your decisions align with your core values, and helps you recognize and overcome fears, dismantle implicit cycles, manage insecurity, and strengthen your communication. This kind of self-awareness becomes especially important during life's transitional moments, when developing healthy cognitions and habits provides a framework for emotional stability and long-term resilience. Together, we can identify maladaptive thought patterns, explore cognitive reframing, and practice reduced reactivity to manage stress and build emotional regulation over time. Throughout all of it, you remain the true expert on yourself. The goal is always a collaborative partnership, one where the safety of a strong therapeutic alliance gives you the freedom to grow toward your most personal goals. My role as a helper and listener began as the oldest sister in my family and grew through many meaningful professional experiences. Before becoming a therapist, I offered career counseling to adults with disabilities, helping them develop self-advocacy skills, build independence, and practice radical acceptance. I also supported college students as they navigated the unique pressures of campus life and the challenges of emerging adulthood, exploring together questions of identity, relationships, and purpose. These experiences deepened my commitment to becoming a therapist. Over the years, I've developed a clinical identity grounded in continuous learning. Every session offers fresh perspective and a deeper understanding of the human experience. My approach is tailored to each person's unique needs, and I am committed to evolving alongside my patients by incorporating creative modalities and evidence-based treatments. In my free time, I enjoy spending time in nature, watching movies, being creative, and exploring new museums and restaurants around the city.

Our Psychological Testing and Evaluation services help our patients accurately identify ADHD, Autism, giftedness and more to help inform treatment planning and/or support in school or at work. From psychotherapy and sports performance to psychological testing Our affirmative therapists are compassionate, collaborative and work with clients on both short and long term goals. Most of our patients have not worked with an affirmative therapist before and are relieved to get started. What We Can Help With: Our therapists treat a wide variety of mental health concerns from adjusting to life changes and stress, to OCD and phobias. I offer sessions that are client focused and curious. In our sessions, we co-create a space with compassion, creativity and humor to foster an environment where you can feel both safe and challenged to grow. I practice with a psychodynamic relational approach that is trauma-informed and socially aware of power and privilege, critical of psychological paradigms that pathologize suffering. I specialize in working with queer and trans clients with a particular focus on trauma, dissociation, and grief. I ground my work in an anti-oppressive and queer-affirming approach that acknowledges the many experiences we bring on both an individual and societal level.

The enormous number of stressors we face daily are intense these days: the climate, global unrest and politics, the economy, overwork, isolation, disconnection. All of this is tremendously difficult to manage alone. Anxiety, anger, depression, resentment, boredom; sadness, rage, exhaustion, denial. If you're struggling with any of this -- or any other states that often bring people to therapy, like feeling lost or overwhelmed, relationship issues, lack of direction, emptiness, grief -- it's worth investing the time and effort to get help, get grounded, and find a better path forward. I offer both in-person & remote therapy. If you're suffering, struggling, having difficulty focusing or functioning, you may really benefit from talking with an empathic and skilled therapist (with room for humor). Life is a lot to handle on one's own. If you've ever considered trying to better understand things about your life, the first phone call awaits. Psychoanalytic psychotherapy offers deep empathic understanding and useful insights that can be grounding and freeing. Therapy expands your capacities and coping strategies while helping you understand yourself & loved ones better. Significant change takes time, but often real relief is experienced just by starting the process. Are you ready to begin?

Janet Black LCSW
Therapy can offer a path to personal freedom. I want to know who you are, how you are, and how you want to be. My basic training is psychoanalytic, but an overall integrative approach fosters understanding of how life has shaped you, and how it plays out in current living situations, and especially how one's strengths can be brought to good use. I know that a person can change, evolve, develop meaningful relationships, first and foremost with themselves. I work collaboratively with individuals and couples to find the way to emotional liberation - always a deeply personal course. I welcome clients to my home-office in New York (Upper West Side) or via video conference.

The students I work best with are curious, thoughtful, and often in a period of deep self-questioning. Many are figuring out who they are, what they believe, and what kind of life they want to build. Some have experimented with psychedelics and are left with big questions afterward about meaning, identity, emotions, or reality itself. They want support in making sense of those experiences in a grounded, non-judgmental way. I also work well with students who feel alone or disconnected, especially when that feeling traces back to childhood experiences, family dynamics, or early trauma. These students may struggle with anxiety, sadness, shame, or a sense that they don’t quite belong. Therapy with me is a space to slow down, feel understood, and explore what’s coming up without pressure to have it all figured out.
