When I began college it was 8 years after high school and I was married. I was anxious that I may not be able to get the degrees that I wanted after being out of school for so long, but I was experiencing childlessness and wanted to be a mother. Keeping busy was something that I needed due to major depression. We did not have free college opportunities then, so I had to make the grades in order to finance this endeavor. This became a goal which required good study habits and commitment. I attended a community college first, then UTC, and then I completed my masters at Grand Canyon University with a 4.0 GPA. This paid for all of the undergraduate work but not for my Master's, which landed me in debt, but I survived. I have been an entrepreneur for 4 decades of various specialties, and have worn many hats. I love music, art, and journalism which have become most beneficial. I have written 37 songs and intend to write a book soon. I went through 6 surgeries to have my two daughters and have 3 special needs grandchildren and one special needs daughter. As a trauma-informed psychotherapist, I have repeatedly seen the benefits of targeting trauma directly in a consistent way. Supported by research, dealing with the most distressing incident(s) can more efficiently help you become more present in your life, enjoy things you had before, and create a future you want. My approach is supportive and goal-oriented, and I am here to help you in this journey. I focus on individual treatment. I enact treatments of Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Prolonged Exposure (PE), and Written Exposure Therapy (WET). I also use Skills Training in Affective and Interpersonal Relationships (STAIR) to address trauma-related symptoms without targeting trauma. The goal of my practice is to strengthen individuals to help them create long-lasting positive effects in their lives.

My approach to psychotherapy is highly relational. I believe that most of our distress in life, often in the form of anxiety, depression, or uncontrolled anger, arises from unresolved conflicts in our important relationships, past and present, and that psychotherapy works by providing a new relationship-a supportive, empathic one in a which person can explore these important interpersonal connections, come to understand them in new ways, and change them. I focus the dialogue on a person's significant relationships, past and current, and on the feelings that one has about oneself and the important people in one's life. In the therapy dialogue, I help people to draw connections between present and past relationship patterns in their lives. Central to my therapeutic approach is a focus on emotions and feelings, especially painful or traumatic ones, so that those feelings can be understood, released, and replaced by more positive emotions. In addition to helping people overcome things like anxiety, depression, anger, and relationship problems, I have a particular interest in the treatment of trauma and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Although my approach is mainly exploratory or open ended, I use more directly trauma-focused or cognitive-behavioral techniques when needed.

Everyone deserves support, however they arrive — color-coded planner in hand or running five minutes late with coffee spilled down their shirt. Anxious, calm, talkative, quiet, existentially confused — you’re welcome here. The bigger question is really: Am I your kind of therapist? You might read my profile and think, “She gets me,” or, “Why is she so emotionally invested in foxes and axolotls?” Either way, I promise I’m still licensed. I’m an LPC-MHSP, LCPC with over nine years of experience. I mainly work with PTSD, OCD, DV/SA, and BPD. I also see a range of other concerns—because humans are complex, and the universe did not consult the DSM before handing out life experiences. People usually open up more when they don’t feel pressure to perform or deliver a TED Talk about their feelings. Autonomy matters to me. You get to ask questions, collaborate on your treatment, and arrive exactly as you are — glamorously put-together or held together by three bobby pins and sheer willpower. If you need to laugh, cry, swear, or take a strategic pause while your soul hits “buffering,” that’s part of the process. Life gets messy… it's real and unfiltered. *** I schedule by appt so I do not have posted hours. Please just reach out. I am flexible!

Keisha Kennedy- Feeling Empowered, LLC
My counseling style is warm and inviting. I believe in being completely non-judgmental, sensitive and compassionate. I want to start where you are wherever you are in your journey through different human experiences. My psychotherapy approach is a combination of cognitive-behavioral, motivational interviewing, interpersonal, solution focused and client centered. I enjoy working with individuals with traits and tendencies of attachment that manifests by way of questioning self-worth, feeling unworthy of love, fear that healthy relationships cannot exist, obsession with loss and difficulty moving forward, taking on others feelings and beliefs as your own, guilt/shame, inability to receive feedback without feelings of failure/rejection and experiencing confusion/seeking clarity around identity. In my down time, I love to relax and have a good time. For fun, I enjoy listening to music and singing, traveling, trying new restaurants and foods, reading, laughing and spending time with loved ones.

When we are changing and growing, we can often feel anxious, overwhelmed, disoriented or uncertain. It is possible to move through the discomfort and regain our sense of empowerment. Experiences in our past can show up in our present relationships, mood, behavior and worldview. Counseling may include a combination of experiential, EMDR, mindfulness, and solution-focused therapy. We'll build off your strengths and explore what will be most helpful for you. Weekend and evening appointments available. My beliefs include: There is no such thing as unusual behavior if you know someone's whole story • We don’t exist in a vacuum • Science is real • Black lives matter • Women’s rights and LGBTQ+ rights are human rights • The struggle is real but we don't have to go through it alone • Kindness and social justice are worth fighting for.
